Ricardo Santos is a senior researcher at the Intelligent Systems group of Fraunhofer Portugal AICOS. His work focuses on developing Artificial Intelligence methods that address the challenges of real-world medical data, including missing, multimodal, and sparse information, to support reliable and practical clinical applications. He has been investigating representation learning approaches, such as ICU-BERT, for a variety of medical tasks, with particular emphasis on improving model generalization across different patient populations and healthcare contexts. In parallel, his research explores the use of synthetic medical data, accounting for the longitudinal nature of patient registries, to advance ethically sound and transparent AI solutions in healthcare.
