Dr. Melissa Wittens (imec-SMIT, VUB) is a postdoctoral researcher with a background in neuroscience, working on trust, transparency, and human oversight in AI systems applied to healthcare settings. During her doctoral research, she focused on automated brain volumetrics in Alzheimer’s disease in real-world clinical settings. Building on this, her current research adopts a socio-technical perspective on human-AI interaction, focusing on how to determine the right level of meaningful human oversight within complex AI and decision support systems. She has extensive expertise in designing and evaluating clinical decision support systems, as well as in participatory methods that integrate clinical workflow realities, cognitive workload considerations, and accountability mechanisms.
