Kartik Chawla is a research scientist at TNO working on legal system automation — the practice of turning legal and regulatory requirements into systems that can actually execute, verify, and operationalise them. With a background spanning law, economics, and information systems and a PhD from Tilburg University, he works at the boundary where legal text meets technical requirements, translating in both directions. His work covers a broad range of applications: from Rules-as-Code, Data Spaces, and Digital Product Passports, to Privacy Enhancing Technologies, and Digital Identity infrastructures. The common thread is making legal complexity less of a burden — for organisations trying to comply, and for the systems that encode and govern it. He holds CIPT and CIPP/E certifications.
