This session sees the participation of the GLACIATION, MobiSpaces, PISTIS, TANGO, and TEMA; the European project GovTech Incubator; and the research centre RI.SE. In this session we bring together several frontrunners in research and innovation in Europe to explore the latest developments in the current techno-economic paradigm shift.”. At the core of this paradigm shift lies the convergence of Artificial Intelligence and (European) data spaces, driving forward unprecedented technological and economic advancements. However, these advancements have also elicited significant concerns about their societal impact and have called for agile approaches to governance. To address these concerns, we will delve into three interconnected approaches – standardisation, open source development, and regulatory sandboxing – to develop responsible Artificial Intelligence solutions within the reference architecture of European data spaces. Led by pioneers in research and innovation, this workshop aims to identify common challenges that are foreseen in implementing these approaches. Our goal is to equip participants with the ability to frame the issues at hand and enrich their understanding of similar or complementary stakeholder perspectives.

Our session will explore the current policy landscape with a focus on data spaces and Artificial Intelligence in Europe. We will guide participants in sense-making activities, enabling them to identify the most relevant and common issues and challenges from the perspective of key stakeholders, including Horizon Europe projects, research centers. The workshop will facilitate a rich exchange among participants, allowing for deep dives into the description of such challenges.

After an introduction, participants will participate in an ice-breaker to kick-start the interaction and to begin sharing ideas. This is followed by the challenge setting phase, when participants will elaborate on their perspectives and develop an agreement on the most pressing challenges. Finally is the policy canvas, when participants will work together to describe the challenge they identified towards a shared understanding.
