AI against Disinformation
AI technologies, with their capability to generate convincing fake texts, images, audio and videos (often referred to as ‘deepfakes’), present significant difficulties in distinguishing authentic content from synthetic creations. Disinformation has become one of the defining challenges of our time, eroding trust in institutions, polarising societies, and threatening democratic processes worldwide. To address these pressing issues, a series of cutting-edge research and innovation (R&I) initiatives have been launched, under several Horizon Europe topics, including HORIZON-CL4-2021-HUMAN-01-27 “AI to Fight Disinformation”, HORIZON-CL4-2023-HUMAN-01-CNECT, “A human-centred and ethical development of digital and industrial technologies”, and DIGITAL-2022-CLOUD-AI-03-DS-MEDIA, “Trusted European Data Spaces”.
The workshop will present state-of-the art AI-based tools and methodologies for automated content verification, detection of manipulated media and deepfakes, and understanding of the societal implications of disinformation in the media ecosystem. The use of GenAI to interactively support citizens to apply critical thinking analytic processes that eventually equipe them with the knowledge and tools to identify, analyse, and counter disinformation effectively in their daily lives will also be discussed. Finally, business cases on how to explore data spaces in the media sector to counter-fight disinformation will also be addressed.
