Interoperable Data Ecosystems and AI-Driven Digital Twins for Ocean and Inland Water Systems: The Oslo Data Fjord Case
Water systems are increasingly impacted by climate change, environmental degradation, and fragmented data ecosystems, limiting the ability to deploy trustworthy AI and Digital Twins for decision-making. In parallel, the European Data Strategy calls for the development of sectoral data spaces to enable interoperable, secure, and AI-ready data sharing across domains.
This session brings together different complementary Water-related European initiatives:
WATERVERSE, CyclOps, IDEATION, SEADITO, AquaINFRA and SVADA.
This session is extending from the previous session on “Data-Driven Resilient Territories”, here with a particular focus on Water. The projects will demonstrate how interoperable data infrastructures, semantic integration, and AI operationalisation can jointly support the emergence of European Water Data Spaces powering Digital Twins for Inland waters and Digital Twins for the Ocean.
Particularly, the IDEATION project has created a roadmap for how future Digital Twins of Inland Waters should be defined in order to be interoperable with one other and with the Digital Twins of the Ocean. In these Digital Twin of Inland waters environments: the WATERVERSE project enables the efficient data management, FAIRification, quality assurance, and interoperability of heterogeneous water datasets, preparing them for seamless integration into data spaces; on top, CyclOps operationalises AI through AIOps and DataOps pipelines, enabling models to access distributed data space resources, be trained and deployed automatically, and exposed as reusable AI services.
In this big picture: SEADITO project shows how leveraging the European Digital Twin of the Ocean (EDITO) can represent a basis for additional socio-ecological data and services, including challenges related to flooding and water pollution; while AquaINFRA makes use of analytics and AI services through the Galaxy scientific workflow platform in the context of EOSC – the European Open Science Cloud to support data discovery and access to FAIR Freshwater/Inland water data and services related also to coastal and ocean data.
Leveraging local data is mandatory to release impactful Digital Twin of inland waters, according to this, the Swedish SVADA project is creating a foundational structure for a shared, interoperable dataspace where municipalities, authorities, suppliers, and research actors can securely and systematically share and reuse water-related data.
