European Tech Sovereignty through Privacy-Preserving AI and Data spaces
European tech sovereignty depends on Europe’s ability to control how data is accessed, processed, and used in AI systems without compromising openness, innovation, or competitiveness. This interactive workshop will examine how privacy-enhancing technologies (federated learning, secure multi-party computation, homomorphic encryption, confidential computing, synthetic data), interoperable European data spaces, and Data ecosystems together create a deployable architecture for sovereign, trustworthy AI. Rather than treating sovereignty as a policy concept alone, the session will focus on operational mechanisms that scale across sectors. We will explore how federated and privacy-preserving processing allows AI training without centralising sensitive data; how data spaces provide governance, identity, and interoperability frameworks for trusted exchange; and how Data infrastructures ensure traceability, quality, and regulatory alignment across AI pipelines. The goal is to move from fragmented initiatives toward an integrated European Sovereign AI development that strengthens strategic autonomy while remaining aligned with EU values and regulation.
