The clean energy transition increasingly depends on the ability to connect physical infrastructure, digital intelligence and trusted data sharing across sectors. As energy systems become more decentralized, data-intensive and software-driven, Digital Twins and Energy Data Spaces are emerging as complementary enablers for improving system visibility, operational coordination, resilience and innovation. At the same time, this transition raises important questions related to interoperability, standardization, governance, policy alignment and the practical integration of digital solutions into real-world value chains.

This session brings together perspectives from leading-edge European projects, industry initiatives and local use cases to examine how Digital Twins, AI-enabled digitalisation approaches and interoperable data-sharing mechanisms can support sustainable energy transition. Building on the experience of ORION, INTEREST and SAGE, and connecting to the broader work of the BDVA Energy Task Force, the session will address both strategic and implementation-oriented dimensions: from policy context and methodological frameworks to standards-based data exchange, cross-domain interoperability and concrete demonstrations.

A central focus of the session is the integration of Digital Twins with Energy Data Spaces. Through real-world examples and demonstrations, participants will explore how AAS, SINDIT and TwinEU Digital Twin  solutions can be configured to share data through a dataspace, and how trusted data-sharing infrastructures and interoperable connectors can enable collaboration between platforms, applications and stakeholders. This includes lessons from micro-grid and local partner use cases, as well as insights from non-energy Data Spaces that can inform future developments in the energy domain.

The session will also provide room for discussion on how these approaches can contribute to more resilient, transparent and scalable energy ecosystems, and how they align with ongoing European priorities such as digital sovereignty, data interoperability, renewable integration and cross-sector collaboration. By combining policy framing, technical approaches and pilot-oriented experience, the session aims to foster dialogue on future collaboration, implementation pathways and best practices for linking Digital Twins and Data Spaces in support of the clean energy transition.

Key discussion points

  • Policy context and digitalisation challenges at the intersection of Digital Twins, trusted energy data sharing and the IoT-edge continuum.
  • Digital Twin methodologies and frameworks developed in ORION and INTEREST, including their relevance for real-world energy applications.
  • Integration of HE TwinEU Energy Digital Twins with HE ENERSHARE and DEP INSIEME Energy Data Space projects through interoperable and standards-based connectors.
  • Transferable lessons from non-energy Data Spaces, including AAS and SINDIT Digital Twin integration approaches.
  • Future collaboration opportunities across projects, local partners, policy actors and standardisation communities.
