Big Data and Edge computing for Maritime Domain Awareness
The objective of this session is to present the challenges and the proposed solutions of the maritime use cases, in terms of big data and edge processing, which are addressed by three ongoing RIA projects (Crexdata, MobiSpaces and VesselAI). More specifically, Crexdata aims at developing a platform for real-time critical situation management including flexible action planning and agile decision making over streaming data of extreme scale and complexity. The maritime use case of Crexdata focuses on the development of a crisis mitigation solutions that leverage streaming data from multiple sources and in order to early detect and forecast anomalous events (e.g., sea conditions, collisions) and propose actions to be taken to avoid accidents. MobiSpaces aims at the development of state-of-the-art components that cover the complete lifecycle of mobility data using trustworthy and privacy-preserving infrastructures. In particular, the “ΜΤ Tracker” use case of MobiSpaces aims at the development of a new edge device that combines AIS and radar transmissions from vessels in-situ, leveraging AI and edge computing techniques. Finally, VesselAI aims at developing, validating and demonstrating a novel holistic framework based on a combination of the state-of-the-art HPC, Big Data and AI technologies, capable of performing extreme-scale and distributed analytics for fuelling the next-generation digital twins in maritime applications and beyond. The VesselAI maritime use cases cover a larger spectrum of different maritime problems such as: (a) accurate route prediction, (b) accurate weather rerouting, (c) autonomous vessel operations, and (d) accurate and intime collision prediction.
